Deciding Whether Or Not To Take Advantage Of Iphone Softphone Technology Is A Pretty Easy Decision
The attractionl to iPhone softphone technology is easy to understand—talking via softphone, or using voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) to make calls, doesn’t require the use of expensive cellular minutes. That means no long distance charges either. iPhone softphone is really just VoIP software that you download and install on your iPhone. Actually, you can use this same iPhone softphone software to use your iTouch as a phone as well. This makes iPhone softphone particularly appealing.
Until recently taking advantage of iPhone softphone technology was not an easy task. Part of that is by design on the part of Apple. When iPHone was introduced Apple did not plan to support the development of iPhone softphone applications. This was a strategic decision that was designed to protect AT&T’s market share in traditional cellular talk time. Lucky for iPhone users things have changed and Apple not only supports iPhone software development by third parties but you can download iPhone softphone applications directly from the Apple store.
Today’s iPhone softphone is not without its limitations. The network configuration is a compromise solution that gives users what they want while still protecting AT&T’s cellular network. iPhone softphone is available only on wireless networks (wifi). With wifi networks becoming more widely available everyday, this bodes well for iPhone softphone users.
One of the best things about iPhone softphone is that there are many options available in terms of service providers. Providers will vary from region to region but already some of the large worldwide providers have iPhone softphone apps available. Skype, for example, just recently announced its own iPhone softphone application. This can be downloaded from iTunes/Apple Store. There are others as well and every day new providers are entering the market.
Obviously, the biggest advantage to iPhone softphone is how much money it can save. You can carry fewer monthly minutes and you can avoid long distance charges. iPhone softphone uses SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) technology. SIP simply connects two endpoints. These can be Internet protocol telephones, instant messaging clients, or a sophisticated multimedia conf

erencing application. What this means is that as exciting as the present is for iPhone softphone, the future could be even more exciting. As video phone applications and other more sophisticated uses come online times will become even more exciting for iPhone softphone users. If we remember that today’s VoIP technology is primarily based on 3G networks and that 4G is just around the corner, there is even more reason to be excited.
So if you are not yet on board with iPhone softphone technology you should start thinking more seriously about it. There are many very smart and reliable iPhone softphone applications already available and some of the best are free. Add this to the fact that you can drastically reduce your talk time minutes used and avoid long distance charges all together it’s pretty hard not to agree that softphone is the way to go. Really, what more reason do you need? If you are an iTouch user, then there is even less reason to hesitate. You can safe significant money using softphone technology and you’ll get to use some very cool apps while you do.
