As its name suggests, the just-launched Television app available at the App Store (part of iTunes) lets iPhone and iPod Touch owners watch TV programs on their handheld device.

While not live streaming, this $2.99 download from Makayama lets users watch more than 50 pre-recorded television shows from 30 channels including CNN, NBC, CBS, MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, BBC, SKY and ITV. A Wi-Fi connection is required for viewing.

Sprechen Sie Deutsch? Parlez vous Français? Channels from Germany and France are also available.

This software works well — thanks to stutter-free, high-quality video and audio playback — but keep in mind all the content is freely available elsewhere on the web to avoid potential copyright issues. Still, this aggregator is a convenient iPhone companion as all shows are in one place (divided by channel) and content is updated daily.

U.S.-based TV shows you can watch include CNN’s Now in the News, CBS’s Face the Nation, NBC’s Meet the Press and Nightly News, CNBC’s Fast Money, Comedy Central Stand-Up, MTV’s music videos, VH1′s Celebrity Rehab, NBA Highlights, CNET’s First Look and Buzz Report.

More information is available at Apple’s App Store or at the official Television web site.
